UTI (Compilated and/or uncomplicated)
What is Urinary Tract Infection (UTIs)?
Urinary tract infection, also known as UTI, is an inflammation of the parts of the urinary system that drain urine from the body, including the urethra, bladder, ureters and kidneys. Delays in diagnosis and treatment may result in irreversible and permanent damage to the developing kidneys, including renal scarring, hypertension, and renal failure.
Causes
Urinary tract infections in children are usually caused by bacteria from the digestive tract entering the urethra, and there is often no apparent reason why some children develop urinary tract infections and others do not.
There are a number of risk factors associated with UTI in young children, including poor perineal hygiene, excessive diaper use, congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) such as vesicoureteral reflux, Obstruction of the pelvic-ureteric junction, obstructive uropathy, abnormal communication between the urinary tract and the gastrointestinal tract, phimosis in boys, vulval synechiae in girls, and kidney stones.
A child with bowel-bladder dysfunction (BBD) presents with symptoms of urinary urgency, frequency, dysuria, delayed bladder emptying, incontinence, and constipation during toilet training. A urological abnormality is associated with 50% of recurrent urinary tract infections and 10% of one-time urinary tract infections in children are due to a urologic abnormality.
Fungal UTIs occur more frequently in immunocompromised patients, in intensive care units, during prolonged use of antibiotics, and in the presence of indwelling catheters.
